TRI: Toxics Release Inventory
The Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) is required under the federal Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA), Section 313. It comprises a publicly available database that contains detailed information on nearly 650 chemicals and chemical categories that over 21,000 industrial and other facilities manage through disposal or other releases, recycling, energy recovery, or treatment.
The primary function of the TRI is to provide information about potential chemical releases and environmental waste generated and managed by local facilities. Only facilities that meet certain criteria must report. The TRI data are very useful for trending, but must be used in combination with many other types of data to ascertain levels of exposure or risk.
What does the Toxics Release Inventory provide?
TRI includes information about:
- On-site releases and other disposal of toxic chemicals to air, surface water and land;
- On-site recycling, treatment and energy recovery associated with TRI chemicals;
- Off-site transfers of toxic chemicals from TRI facilities to other locations;
- Pollution prevention activities at facilities;
- Releases of lead, mercury, dioxin and other persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) chemicals; and,
- Facilities in a variety of industry sectors (including manufacturing, metal mining, and electric power generation) and some federal facilities.
The reporting year (RY) 2010 Toxics Release Inventory dataset is now available on the U.S. EPA website. The U.S. EPA Toxics Release Inventory National Analysis is also now available.

Methods of Reporting
Indiana participates in the TRI Data Exchange and the TRI Report will simultaneously be sent to Indiana, therefore no paper or electronic reports should be sent to the state.
There are two methods available to regulated facilities for submitting TRI data to U.S. EPA for RY 2011:
- The majority of facilities submit TRI reports via TRI-MEweb, U.S. EPA's online TRI reporting application. IDEM provides additional information about TRI-MEweb.
- Facilities are encouraged to use the fillable/printable TRI forms if they need to submit their forms in hard copy.
