IDEM's Auto Salvage Program takes a comprehensive, integrated approach to addressing environmental problems originating from the auto salvage facility sector in Indiana. The program includes a compliance assistance manual [PDF], workshops, and compliance inspections.
In early 2003, IDEM staff held seven workshops for auto salvage facility owners/operators. IDEM distributed a compliance assistance manual [PDF] to every registered salvage yard in Indiana. Information was conveyed via the manual and workshops to help owners assess their facility's compliance status and to address potential areas of non-compliance. IDEM included information concerning the proper clean up of contaminated areas in the compliance assistance materials.
After more than 16-months of compliance assistance, IDEM embarked on the compliance inspection phase of the program. IDEM conducted over 50 compliance inspections. IDEM is currently working to transition the grant-funded Auto Salvage Project into a continuously operating environmental program, complete with compliance assistance, inspection, and enforcement components.
