In 2009, the Indiana legislature enacted the Indiana Electronic Waste (E-Waste) Law (IC 13-20.5), which holds certain electronics manufacturers responsible for collecting and recycling a percentage of the products they sell in Indiana. The law also includes a prohibition for small businesses, schools, and households to knowingly mix electronic waste with municipal or other waste intended for disposal to a landfill or incinerator. This prohibition took effect January 1, 2011. While the law does not carry any penalties for violation of this requirement and does not prohibit solid waste haulers, transfer stations or landfills from accepting E-Waste, IDEM is asking that solid waste collection and disposal businesses help educate their customers on this prohibition.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management provides detailed information regarding e-waste management, listings of participating manufactures, recyclers, and collection locations, along with many fact sheets regarding this law. We invite you to take the time to review what this law means for you as well as all citizens of Indiana as the state promotes the recycling of electronics to ensure these materials are safely managed and that valuable materials such as steel, glass and plastic are reclaimed for the manufacturing of new products.
You can find a list of Indiana E-waste Collectors and Locations online, or contact your local solid waste management district for information about where to recycle your e-waste.
Because the Arcelor Mittal Burns Harbor and U.S. Steel Midwest facilities discharge treated wastewater to the same water body close to one another, IDEM is presenting both permits for public review at the same time. IDEM is holding a 45 day public notice period for each permit and has scheduled a public hearing for each permit. The first public hearing will be at 6 p.m. on December 9, 2010, at NIRPC, for the draft wastewater permit for the Mittal Burns Harbor facility. The second public hearing will be at 6 p.m. on December 14, 2010, at NIRPC, for the draft wastewater permit for the U.S. Steel Midwest facility. Permit documents are available for public review for each facility.
The Department of Homeland Security has set up several workshops around the state to assist the regulated community and LEPCs with CRTK reporting requirements. The purpose of these meetings is to clarify CRTK regulation and to demonstrate how to report using the Regulatory Service Portal, IDEM’s online reporting system. Workshops will conclude with a question and answer session.
