2008 IndianaMap Road Shows

This fall, the Indiana Geographic Information Council (IGIC) is presenting a series of Road Shows designed to inform Hoosiers - especially those in local government - how the IndianaMap legislation is changing GIS across the state. The legislation was enacted last year, and mandates the creation of a single, statewide, digital map for Indiana. Each one-day Road Show will address what this means for local government. Specific topics will include data sharing between different levels of government, funding opportunities, and future IndianaMap initiatives.

Morning sessions will provide information about the project: its benefits, impact and long-term goals. Speakers will show how local data is already being incorporated into the IndianaMap, and outline grants available to local governments to support their participation. Afternoon sessions will focus on Web Feature Services (WFS). This new technology will be the mechanism for combining data into a seamless statewide map.

Agenda

Speakers will be Jim Sparks, Indiana Geographic Information Officer, Phil Worrall, IGIC Executive Director, and representatives from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Technical presentation on WFS will be by Jeff Ehman of Image Matters.

Developing Land Cover and Land Use Datasets
Friday, January 25th, 1:00-3:30pm
Indiana State Library
140 N. Senate Ave, History Reference Room
Indianapolis, IN 46204
IGIC Members: FREE
Nonmembers: $20

Indiana has collected statewide digital imagery that can be used to produce information on what covers the landscape (land cover) and how these landscape elements are used (land use). This information can then be used to support stormwater, natural resources, urban planning, forestry and many others areas of land management.

This seminar will show a number of semi-automated approaches to creating impervious surface maps, canopy maps, land cover maps and land use maps, using remote sensing and GIS modeling techniques. There will also be an overview of the processes used, with examples of the final products, and their applications. The presentation will be given by Dr. Andrew Brenner, General Manager, Sanborn Ann Arbor.

Approaches to Using Oblique Aerial Imagery
Friday, March 28th, 1:00-3:30pm
Indiana State Library
140 N. Senate Ave, History Reference Room
Indianapolis, IN 46204
IGIC Members: FREE
Nonmembers: $20

Every once in a while a new tool comes along that commands your attention. Oblique Aerial View (OAV) imagery is one such tool. It is changing the way that government agencies, emergency managers and private companies do business throughout their enterprise. Join us as Fred Baltrusis and Dave Surina from the City of Indianapolis, and Rick Hammond of Woolpert talk about the challenges of making these large datasets accessible to a wide audience, including implementation, training, data maintenance and all the lessons learned. You'll also find out what makes all of the effort worthwhile.

Indiana's Historical Aerial Photography
Thursday, April 17th, 1:30-2:30pm
WEBINAR
FREE

The Indiana Geological Survey (IGS) has created an interactive map (http://igs.indiana.edu/IHAPI) to facilitate retrieval of historical aerial photos (HAPs) by both expert GIS users and the general public. The website shows the locations of more than 100,000 individual photographs from the 1930s to the 1980s. Users can locate a time or area they are interested in, and order those photos from various archival collections, including the IGS archive which contains nearly 40,000 images. Denver Harper of IGS will walk attendees through an online tutorial showing how to use this exciting new tool.

Registrants will receive an email with login information and phone number one week prior to the event. Note: This is not a toll-free phone call, long distance charges may apply.

Water, Water, Everywhere: Finding and Using Hydrology Data
Friday, May 16th, 1:00-3:30pm
Indiana State Library
140 N. Senate Ave, History Reference Room
Indianapolis, IN 46204
IGIC Members: FREE
Nonmembers: $20

Join Sally Letsinger of the Indiana Geological Survey to learn how you can use GIS to estimate runoff potential; analyze conservation plans; calculate groundwater flow rates; or predict how fast contaminants will move through a stream system. Topics will include:
  • Elevation-derived hydrography data
  • Resources for hydrology datasets
  • Groundwater data in GIS-based analysis
  • Incorporating land cover, elevation and soil data into hydrogeology models
