You should download and install the program on your computer a day or two before you need to present the course. This will give you time to make sure that everything is working properly.

If you wait until the last minute, you will surely face problems. If you have trouble completing the installation or running the program, contact your computer specialist for assistance. If you follow the instructions you should not have any problems.

Important Information

As of July 1, 2001, the Pre-Basic Video presentation mode is obsolete. It has been replaced by new technology in the form of a PowerPoint presentation on-line.

Therefore, as of July 1, 2001, no credit will be given for programs started after this date. You are asked to erase or otherwise make the outdated videos non-usable. Likewise, any Pre-Basic CD ROM programs on your hard-drive should also be deleted.

The on-line program will make it more efficient for departments in that you will have the ability to conduct Pre-Basic programs at any given time.  This zipped program can be accessed by clicking on a link located at the top of this message.  There you will find information as how to download the file to your computer.  You will, however, still be required to send certain information on department letterhead to the Academy as listed below in order to receive a Pre-Basic Support Package needed to complete the course.  Email request will not be accepted.  No credit will be given to those who only view the on-line program.  A request to conduct the course can only be made by a certified Law Enforcement Training Board instructor.  Once the request is received, an email with attachments will be sent to your secured email site.  This email will contain a course schedule, examination (75% minimum score), answer key and affidavit of completion.

Important Pre-Basic Update - 6/1/07

In an effort to effectively and efficiently serve the police community and the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy , the following additional method to file the Pre-Basi"Affidavit of Completion" is offered.  It is in the interest of saving time and money that we present the departments with this option.

Currently the Pre-Basic "Affidavit of Completion" is competed by the department, signed and mailed to the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy .  If, for some reason, the form is not completed upon arrival it is then indicated on the form and returned by mail to the department for correction(s).  It is corrected by the host department and mailed back to the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy .

Therefore we feel this method, for those departments having a scanner and the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy , would save time and money; the following is recommended and implemented.

Upon completion of a Pre-Basic course, the department will fill out the "Affidavit of Completion" form and will have the following options in sending:

1.   Scan the completed affidavit, which includes signatures, and email it to the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (edunn@ilea.in.gov).

If the affidavit is incomplete, the discrepancy will be highlighted and returned by email to the department who will make corrections and return by email to the academy.

2.   Scan the affidavit, minus the signatures and save as a file.  Then scan into a file the required signatures.  Using the "cut and paste" method, insert these signatures onto the affidavit in the proper signature block and email to the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (edunn@ilea.in.gov).

3.   Take a digital camera image of the required signatures and upload from the camera into a computer. Then insert the signatures onto the form and email to the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (edunn@ilea.in.gov).  Once the signature images are saved, you will have them on file for additional Pre-Basic forms.

4.   For those department that do not have a scanner, please continue to send the completed affidavit via US Mail/Fax to the attention of Lt. Lance M. Burris until such time as your department obtains one.

If you have any questions about the new option, you may contact Lt. Lance M. Burris at (317) 837-3265 or lburris@ilea.in.gov.

Thank you for your continued support and help in training Indiana Police Officers.
