Executive Director Rusty Goodpaster

As I scrapped the ice off my windshield this morning it reminded me that Fall is here and it is time for a new entry for the “From the Desk of the Executive Director”.  It also reminded me I need to clean out my garage so I can fit my car in there but that is a whole different story.

I will start with the sad news of the passing of Mr. Joe Holmes.  Joe served on the Law Enforcement Training Board’s Advisory Council since 1976.  He was a true supporter of law enforcement and of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.  His valuable input on training related issues will be missed as well as his friendship.

We have a few more personnel changes to announce:

  • Dave Younce has been promoted to Captain and will now oversee the In-Service Division of ILEA.  Please congratulate Dave with you see him.
  • Roy Overshiner is our newest Staff Duty Officer.  Roy retired from the Salem Police Department.
  • Barb Somers will be transferring from Housekeeping to Quartermaster and Tracie Hubbard will be joining our Housekeeping staff.

On the good news front, we were able to obtain a grant through the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute to purchase two driving simulators, a MILO firearms system and a new SkidCar platform.  The new equipment is being used for the first time with this current Basic class.  I want to thank all our staff who assisted in this project as it will have a positive impact on the training our students receive and will allow them to be better prepared upon graduation.

We also received a grant through Firehouse Subs to purchase comprehensive first aid kits for our main building, EVO and Firearms range.

I would also like to thank our staff and ISP for the work on our Tactical Engagement Center.  A much needed cleaning and upgrade was completed by this joint effort.

Keeping in line with my “time goes by fast” theory from my last entry I would encourage you all to take the time this upcoming Holiday season to:

  • Help a child carve a pumpkin.
  • Eat lots of turkey while surrounded by family.
  • Remember the “reason for the season”.

Have a great rest of 2012 and hope to see you at our Training Coordinators’ Conference on November 28th and 29th.

Rusty Goodpaster,
ILEA Executive Director
