Robert H. Black, Master Instructor

... served for twenty (20) years with the Valparaiso Police Department and retired as the Assistant Chief prior to joining the staff at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in October of 1990. Lieutenant Black served his entire tenure at Valparaiso Police Department in uniformed patrol; serving as a department training officer for eighteen (18) years, which he trained and commanded the tactical unit, and developed more than a dozen departmental programs.

Lieutenant Black is currently the Director of Physical Tactics and Director of Physical Education. Lieutenant Black is also a certified personal trainer, holding fitness specialist certifications from several different organizations. Lieutenant Black continues to provide specialized training to private and public sector organizations, universities, law enforcement and the military in the areas of physical tactics, firearms, and physical fitness. Lieutenant Black has studied several styles of martial arts for nearly three (3) decades and holds fifteen (15) different instructor certifications in the law enforcement use of force arena.

Lieutenant Black graduated from the eleventh (11th) Basic Session of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and attended Purdue University from 1967 to 1971. Lieutenant Black has served as the Assistant State Director for the Justice System Training Association, receiving numerous awards for distinguished service.

Lieutenant Black's primary duties include Physical Tactics, Physical Education, and coordinating the Physical Fitness Assessment for the Basic Course.
