The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is updating its current 2005-2030 Long Range Plan to 2010-2035 to:

  • Provide a minimum 20 to 25 year future planning horizon;
  • Determine long-range transportation system improvement needs;
  • Integrate the long range plan with the Indiana Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) 2012 to 2015 and the Major Moves construction program;
  • Keep up to date with the transportation plans developed by our planning partners at the state’s fourteen Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), seven Regional Planning Organizations (RPOs), and the states cities, towns and county planning efforts.
  • Incorporate the results of recently completed planning studies, such as the Indiana Multimodal Freight and Mobility Plan, the Indiana Mass Transit Studies and the Indiana Rail Plan.

The 2035 Long Range Plan provides a strategy for the future of the state highway system, which is intended to provide Hoosiers the highest level of mobility and safety possible, and to meet the needs of economic development and quality of life into the next quarter century. The 2035 Long Range Plan also provides an update of multimodal transportation issues from the INDOT rail, public transportation and aviation offices.

INDOT conducted plan coordination and consultation meetings with the state’s fourteen MPOs,  RPOs and the six-INDOT Districts representing their respective cities, towns and county planning efforts.  Visit The Plan Development Meeting Notes page to view the meeting notes.

As part of the INDOT plan update process, INDOT initiated a 45-day public comment period on the INDOT draft 2010-2035 Long-Range Transportation Plan. INDOT Planning Staff traveled to each of the six-INDOT Districts to present the INDOT draft Long-Range Plan to stakeholders. These meetings involved a combination of a formal presentation and an open-house format to address public questions.

Plan Update Process

Transportation planning is a continuing process. The development of future plans will be conducted through a series of District public outreach and stakeholder meetings and consultation and coordination efforts with the states MPOs, RPOs and the INDOT District Planning Offices. These efforts will include District project coordination meetings conducted for Indiana Statewide Transportation Improvement Program and the Major Moves construction program. The INDOT website will also be used to provide plan update information and collect public and stakeholder input.
