INDOT’S Graduate Engineer Development Program (GEDP) is the next step after graduation. The GEDP is designed around a training program that meets the needs of the participants and advances their education. The typical program lasts one year with rotations working at Central Office in Indianapolis and in an INDOT District Office. The program can be made longer or shorter based on participant interests and past experience.
Participants in this program will:
During the program, participants will gain years of experience in a matter of weeks. One week you may be working on an active construction site – learning layout and supervising bridge construction. The next week participants may be in a high-tech materials testing laboratory – smashing steel beams to test for strength or drilling with a huge machine to test soil quality.
After completing the Graduate Engineer Development Program, participants will work with their GEDP Coordinator to find a permanent assignment at INDOT in the location and career path that’s right for them and INDOT.
Participants in the Graduate Engineering Degree Program will gain hands-on experience in the following areas:
Construction
Participants will gain on-site training in field construction, including layout, excavation, embankment and drainage. Participants also will prepare for construction jobs and check final construction records.
Materials Management
Program participants will learn how to test and inspect highway materials, tour an asphalt plant and see an underground mine first-hand.
Traffic Engineering
Participants will conduct traffic investigations, learn advanced signal-timing techniques and more.
Structures and Bridge Design
Refine design skills with courses in geometrics, hydraulics, soils and pavements,
along with on-the-job training.
Geotechnical and Foundation
Test aggregates, cement, steel and other materials. In addition, participants will gain hands-on experience with soil investigation.
Highway Operations
Learn about work zone safety and check an interstate work zone for safety. Participants also will visit the Emergency Operations Center, learn about pavement preservation techniques, and more.
Hydraulics
Learn how to size culverts, collect data and take photographs – splitting your time between field work and the office.
Roadway Maintenance
Learn about drainage, pavement maintenance, mowing, snow and ice removal and landscaping techniques.
Planning
Learn about the planning strategies INDOT uses to map the future of transportation in Indiana.
Roadway Services
Learn about roadway standards and assist with project design and design review.
Traffic Management
Discover the high-tech systems used for today’s advanced traffic management. From learning about Indiana’s Hoosier Helpers program to traffic cameras, participants will receive an in-depth look at the future of transportation.
Office of Aviation
Participants will be exposed to engineering design standards for developing airport facilities and aviation planning. Additionally, participants will be acquainted with: the airport development fund, airport development grants, tall structure and noise sensitive area permitting, airport pavement condition index program and may get some exposure to the airborne operation of an airplane during the airport inspection and certification process.
