INDOT > About INDOT > Central Office > Welcome to the Southeast District > I-65 at Worthsville Road I-65 at Worthsville Road

This project involves construction of a new interchange at Interstate 65 at Worthsville Road in Johnson County. The purpose of the project is to enhance safety, address traffic congestion, and provide additional access to and from I-65 in Johnson County.

The area has experienced substantial commercial and residential growth, resulting in large increases in traffic volume. Residential and commercial development is also expected to continue to grow in this area which will add to the volumes of traffic moving through this area.

Construction of a new interchange at I-65 and Worthsville Road will enhance economic growth, reduce congestion, and provide better east-west connectivity and traffic movement in Johnson County. The interchange also will ease congestion at the existing I-65 interchanges at Main Street and at Whiteland Road in Johnson County and reduce expected crashes on I-65 and nearby area surface streets.

INDOT has identified the Diverging Diamond as the preferred alternative, which was presented at the Public Hearing on April 11, 2013.  After which, the Federal Highway Administration issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) on June 6, 2013.  INDOT appeared before the Greenwood Redevelopment Commission on June 11, 2013 to communicate these benchmarks to the community.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the I-65/Worthsville Road Diverging Diamond was held Oct. 15, 2014. A joint venture of E&B Paving, Inc., and Gradex, Inc., two central Indiana construction firms, was awarded the $16 million construction contract. Construction began in late 2014 and the project is slated be opened to traffic in November 2015.

Project Updates

Construction work along County Road 200 East is now underway. The rerouting of this county road on the southwest corner of the interchange is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2014 and will require approximately a 10-day closure of CR 200 E.

Construction work on I-65 will begin in late 2014. Work will focus installing temporary pavement and concrete barriers around the Worthsville Road bridge area so that bridge construction can proceed. I-65 traffic will remain largely unaffected; however this work will involve minor shifts in traffic, a speed limit reduction to 60 MPH and placement of a barrier wall along the shoulder and median areas.

Major impacts to I-65 traffic will occur during the night hours between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Periodic lane closures and/or rolling slowdowns will be posted on area message boards. Lane closures are required to place temporary pavement or place and remove temporary barrier walls.

Relocation of Graham Road on the northeast corner of the interchange is scheduled to begin in early 2015, and is expected to take about 60 days. Worthsville Road is slated to close in December 2014. Demolition of the existing bridge over I-65 will occur in December with construction work on the new bridge to begin soon after, weather permitting. Rolling slowdowns will be utilized when the existing Worthsville Road bridge is demolished and the new bridge beams are set.

Related construction work along Worthsville Road also will take place over the winter months, weather permitting. The new Worthsville Road bridge is slated to be completed by fall of 2015.
