US 20 - Elkhart County

U.S. 20, east of Elkhart, Ind., is undergoing an added travel lanes project between County Road 17 and State Road 15 during the 2013 and 2014 construction seasons.

The project, in its entirety, will improve this segment of U.S. 20 by widening it from the existing two-lane roadway to four lanes with a continuous center bi-directional left turn lane. There will be dedicated, striped left turn lanes at all public cross streets, including the signalized intersection with S.R. 15. The purpose of the project is to enhance mobility by addressing existing and anticipated congestion/delays on this segment of U.S. 20.

When completed, U.S. 20 will feature 10-foot shoulders, with sections of 8-foot shoulders where there is curb and gutter.  The existing corrugated metal pipe culvert at Getz Ditch will be replaced with a concrete box culvert with wing walls.

Utility relocation began in the Spring of 2013, following removal of several buildings that were part of a right-of-way purchase. Restrictions in the area began in early July 2013, with a traffic shift to the north side of U.S. 20 to accommodate Phase 1 construction in the eastbound lanes, which will include widening of the roadway, the roadside ditch and basin work, as well as driveway and intersection approaches.

There is a width limit of 11 feet in the construction zone, as well as a reduced speed limit of 40 mph that has been in effect 24 hours a day.

County road approaches from the north and south, including CR 19, CR 21 and CR 23, will close for up to 30 days at a time for intersection work during the two phases of the project.

The construction contract was awarded to Niblock Excavating of Bristol, Ind., based on the low bid of $9.8 million.
