Prerequisites
  • A public safety communications background with exposure to field operations.
  • Fundamental public safety communications technology awareness.
  • Basic knowledge of local communications and communications system, frequencies and spectrum, technologies, local topography, system site locations including knowledge of local, regional, and state communication plans, and communications and resource contacts.
  • Completion of the following training courses: IS 100 Introduction to Incident Command; IS 200 ICS for Single Resources & Int. Action; IS 700a Introduction to NIMS; IS 800b National Response Framework: An Introduction
  • ICS 300 Intermediate ICS for Expanding Incidents - RECOMMENDED, BUT NOT REQUIRED
Prerequisite notes:  Applicants must provide copies of all certificates upon registration along with a written recommendation from the student’s supervisor attesting that the student possesses the knowledge listed above. IC 100, 200, 700a and 800b courses can be taken online at http://training.fema.gov/IS/NIMS.asp.  ICS 300 occurs in a classroom setting.
Course Description  The Communications Technician (COMT) course is a five (5) day, 40 hour class designed for responders who will provide communications technical assistance during emergency events. Participants will learn how to plan, implement, and demobilize communications systems supporting the communications unit in a safe and effective manner to meet the needs of the incident. Due to the amount of hands-on exercises with communications equipment, the class is limited to 10 students.
Target Audience The COMT class is targeted for local, regional, state and federal emergency response professionals and coordination/support personnel with a communications background. This class is targeted to students who have technical aptitude, but not necessarily strong technical experience.
