World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day is held on  December 1 each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day and the first one was held in 1988.  The theme of World Aids Day 2015 is “Getting to zero: Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS-related deaths” which means aiming towards an AIDS free world.

More than 1.2 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV.  HIV can and does affect all people. Some populations and parts of the country have been more affected than others.  While there is not yet a cure, HIV is a preventable and treatable disease.

30 years after the first cases of HIV – The red ribbon is the universal symbol of awareness and support for those living with HIV. The red ribbon was the first ever ribbon symbol.
