How to Identify a Valid Certification of Food Handler Certificate
Certification of Food Handler Requirements Rule
Rev. 8/2012
The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) Rule 410 IAC 7-22, Certification of Food Handler Requirements certification requirement took effect January 1, 2005. The rule incorporates much of the language in IC 16-42-5.2 with a few additions for clarity.
The rule is examination based and does not include a training requirement as part of the rule. Many potential certified food handlers (managers) will be seeking out this information, so attached is a list of entities that offer training and approved examinations. Note: Rule 410 IAC 7-22 requires passing the proctored Food Manager Certification exam. The on-line Food Handler Certificate does not meet Indiana requirements.
The Conference for Food Protection (CFP) has contracted with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to review organizations' programs and examinations to determine if they have qualifications to perform this function. There are four (4) organizations that are approved for certification through the ANSI process and an announcement has been made acknowledging that the 4 have passed and are recognized. The three (3) listed below have services in Indiana and list below them are providers of training courses and approved proctored examinations. Local Health Departments (LDH's) may no longer require county certifications in addition or as a substitute for Rule 410 IAC 7-22.
Note to Certified Food Handlers: Original or photocopied document must be presented during inspections and the Certified Food Handler must present proof of identity if requested by an inspector. To replace a lost Food Handler Certificate, contact the accredited organization through which you originally received your certificate. The ISDH does not retain copies of individual records. A person designatied as the certified food hadler for an food establishment must not allow their certification to expire.
