Approved Technologies

The department maintains the list below of TNI that have been listed for use in Indiana. Where applicable, a link for each technology is provided to the department standards for that technology. These standards are the basis for plan review, construction approvals, training, design and installation, and operation and maintenance (O&M), if applicable.

Information is grouped under four technology categories: "Components," "Secondary Treatment Units," "Soil Absorption Fields," and "Pretreatment Devices,"

Each listing includes the following:

  • Manufacturer information (listed alphabetically by manufacturer's name);
  • The name of the technology;
  • Its status: general approval, conditional approval, and project-by-project approval;
  • Date of approval;
  • Description of the technology;
  • Brief comments regarding the approval; and

Secondary Treatment Systems

The use of secondary treatment systems in Indiana must comply with the requirements in the Indiana Standards for Secondary Treatment Systems. Secondary treatment systems are reviewed by the department after submittal by a manufacturer or system integrator (SI).

To be listed, the manufacturer of a secondary treatment system must have on file with the department an application and documentation for review against the requirements of Indiana Standards for Secondary Treatment Systems. Such listing will have the status either “Project-by-project approval” or “Approved” A status of “Project-by-project approval” means that the department may approve the use of the technology on a case by case basis for individual projects under the parameters of Indiana Standards for Secondary Treatment Systems. But until a general approval is issued, each individual project must be reviewed by the department. When the department has finished a satisfactory review of the technology, the status will be changed from “project-by-project approval” to “Approved.” At that time, local health departments may issue permits for the use of that technology, provided such approvals meet all of the requirements of the standards for that technology as well as all of the requirements of 410 IAC 6-8.3.

For the repair, remediation or replacement of an existing residential onsite soil absorption field, the use of a secondary treatment unit must comply with the applicable requirements of 410 IAC 6-8.3.
