Marketing / Communications Intern
The museum is seeking 2 - 3 part-time interns to update content on the museum's website and intranet as requested by supervisor and internal museum stakeholders. Responsibility requires the ability to use a browser-based Web administration tool. Training will be provided. Additionally, the candidate must possess a keen eye for proofreading and editing and be proactive. Intern will monitor website daily to ensure timeliness of content. Interns may also manage special website projects with external agency.
Interns may develop, coordinate and produce media materials for 14 Indiana State Historic Sites. Responsibilities include working with electronic communications manager and site managers to write and produce written materials, including, but not limited to news releases and fact sheets. Other miscellaneous responsibilities may include coordinating production with internal graphic design department of materials needing design work; digital photography; writing content for electronic newsletters; coordinating details for monthly all-staff meetings, including agendas and set up. Candidates must be pursing a degree in communications, marketing, public relations or journalism. Must have excellent organization skills and be a self-starter who can work independently. Good writing and editing skills a definite plus. Those interviewed will be required to provide writing samples and take a writing/editing test.

Facility Rental / Events Intern
The museum is seeking facility rental / events interns. This position assists the manager of facility rental / events and staff with the coordination of museum facilities, vendors and staff for rental activities and museum programming. This intern coordinates on-site logistics to provide a high quality customer experience for all events. Responsibilities include the following: - Assist in maintaining the museum’s calendar for facility use – a comprehensive log of all internal and external events.
- Assist event rental staff in maintaining effective relationships with potential clients such as corporate meeting planners, convention planners, individuals planning private social events, event planners and others who seek event space.
- Work closely with vendors, including the museum’s exclusive caterer, to ensure that resources are available for internal and external events. Assist with on-site representation for all events.
- Provide liaison with food service contractor in planning museum and rental events.
- Provide effective and timely communication with food service contractor, security, maintenance, housekeeping and all museum staff to ensure that everyone understands his/her role in providing a successful event.
- Support the earned-income goal for event rentals.
- Ensure that administration of event rental area is efficient and well maintained; that correspondence is timely, that responses to inquiries are prompt and efficient, and that prospect and client records are adequately maintained.
- Assist in completing post-event follow-ups and client evaluations as a measurement of customer satisfaction.
- Give creative input to museum program development teams as appropriate.
- Work cooperatively and productively to assist the museum in achieving its overall mission.
Candidates should have experience related to sales, event planning, tourism, customer service or any other related field. Candidates with prior hospitality experience are preferred. Excellent communication and organizational skills are required, and computer software knowledge including Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet Explorer and event management database is preferred.

Graphic Design Intern
The museum is seeking one graphic design intern to work one day a week. The intern will perform a number of graphic design functions for the museum, such as posters, banners, flyers and newsletters. Intern will use equipment like a digital in-house printer, vinyl cutter for lettering and computer software, such as PageMaker PC, Illustrator and Photoshop. The candidate must be computer literate. Familiarity with PageMaker PC, Illustrator and Photoshop is helpful, but not required.

Development Intern
The Indiana State Museum Foundation is seeking 1-2 Development interns to identify prospects for endowment and annual appeals. Interns will provide extensive prospect research. Responsibilities include conducting Internet and library research, reviewing and organizing research, writing reports and filing. In some cases, interns will write to foundations to obtain their giving responsibilities, annual reports and 990s. Additional opportunities include writing and preparing grant proposals and grant reports. Candidates should have excellent analytical, oral and written communication skills and research skills. Proficiency in MS Office and database management is a plus. Experience with Raiser’s Edge is desirable, but not required. CONFIDENTIALITY IS A MUST! Graduate candidates pursuing a degree related to nonprofit management or philanthropic studies are strongly encouraged to apply. Internships are unpaid, but can be performed for class credit. Interns are expected to work a minimum of 10 hours per week for the semester.

Inventory Accountant Intern
The inventory accountant internship is a great position for someone studying accounting or business. The project will demonstrate an ability to work independently and produce a valuable business service. The intern will be responsible for designing and coordinating a physical inventory of everything in the museum that is not a part of the "collections." A qualified candidate should understand the issues of a physical inventory and be able to mark and locate all equipment and document follow–up procedures.

Curatorial Assistant Intern
The curatorial assistant internship works cooperatively with the Cultural History section as well as the Collections Care and Conservation sections to achieve departmental goals. The intern will assist the curatorial staff to ensure that the museum is accountable for all accessioned items in its collections and loaned objects in its possession in accordance with the Indiana Code and professional museum standards. The intern will also work to ensure that all objects in the museum’s permanent collection are stable and that those used for exhibit are rehabilitated to their most presentable state. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the movement, storage and inventorying or researching of artifacts and assisting with the installation or de–installation of exhibitions. The candidate should be dependable and trustworthy, as well as have the following skills: - Ability to reach, bend, use step ladders and lift at least 40 pounds
- Ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner
- Strong organizational skills
- Detail–oriented
- Good coordination and fine motor skills
- Research skills helpful
- Previous exhibition work helpful
- Previous artifact handling or training preferred
- Knowledge of museum methods, techniques and ethics preferred
- Ability to handle fragile objects with extreme care
One intern is needed per curator. The time frame is variable, but flexible, and will be arranged by each individual curator.

Business Retail Management Intern
The business retail management internship offers two qualified individuals the opportunity to receive on–the–job experience with sales, visual merchandising and operations within the museum’s gift shop. Duties may include working with customers to sell merchandise and provide friendly, efficient guest service, serving as a cashier, stocking the sales floor in a clean, attractive and enticing presentation and checking, receiving and ticketing merchandise. Candidates should possess an interest in customer service and retail operations, strong verbal skills and a willingness to obtain and share product knowledge. Computer skills are welcomed but not necessary. Interns must also have a flexible schedule and adhere to loss prevention guidelines and inventory control procedures as well as maintain store cleanliness. This is a one–semester internship.

Museum Studies Intern
The museum studies internship introduces an individual to several areas of the museum—potentially including collections care, exhibit design and installation, education and curatorial. The areas the intern will work in are determined by the museum’s current work needs and the skills and preferences of the individual. Duties may include the following: - Caring for artifacts – learning responsible handling methods and conservation techniques, packing or unpacking items, organizing collections areas, recording data and preparing condition reports
- Installing exhibits – moving artifacts from collections areas to staging or exhibit areas, placing labels, moving furniture or other large objects, cleaning gallery spaces and painting exhibit spaces
- Research – either for educational programs or exhibit information, obtaining accurate information from reliable and documented sources to assist educators or curators with ongoing projects
Candidate should have an interest in and introductory knowledge of museum practices in addition to word–processing skills, the ability to move and lift heavy objects, multitasking skills and excellent written and oral communication skills. The internship requires a one-semester (minimum 10 hours/ week) commitment. The intern’s work schedule and a schedule of projects will be determined in advance of the internship.

Volunteer Services Intern
The volunteer services intern will be required to perform the following duties: - Assist with integrating volunteers into every area of the museum's functions
- Write job descriptions for volunteer positions
- Assist with implementation of a formal system of evaluation of volunteer contribution and performance
- Provide presentations on museum and volunteer programs
- Assist in the development of a policy manual for the volunteer program
- Assist with the development of targeted recruitment plans and implementation of plans
- Assist with statistical analysis of assessing aspects of the volunteer program
- Maintain a strong level of assistance through ongoing efforts to recruit and retain volunteers
- Assist with the augmentation of the volunteer management program augmentation and coordination of volunteer assignments
- Assist with setting up training modules and implementing a computerized volunteer data management system
Candidate must have good people skills and an ability to make each volunteer feel welcome and needed. Good organizational skills and communication skills also required. Through training provided, the intern must be able to acquire a general knowledge of the museum, its programming and exhibition schedule and the museum’s place in Indiana history.
