July 23 – Sept. 9, 2007
Ford Gallery
Don’t miss your opportunity to see a rich variety of works by Indiana artists at the 83rd Annual Hoosier Salon exhibition. Artwork from around the state will grace the walls of the Indiana State Museum’s Ford Gallery from July 23 through Sept. 9.
Returning to the museum for the 18th year, this juried art exhibit showcases art for visitors to admire and even purchase. The exhibit includes both traditional and contemporary works from artists living all across the state. All mediums, with the exception of porcelain and photography, are accepted into the show. Hoosier Salon judges award thousands of dollars in prizes to artists each year. Portions of the show will travel to various exhibits around the state following the completion of the exhibition at the museum.
The Hoosier Salon began in 1925 when the Daughters of Indiana opened the doors to the first exhibition of Indiana artists at the Marshall Field and Co. galleries in Chicago. Naming their show after the famous French “salons” of the 19th century, the women were eager to prove that Indiana artists deserved national recognition. Critics and the public alike applauded the high quality of the art, making the first exhibition a huge success. The Hoosier Salon show was moved to Indianapolis in 1941 and was first exhibited at the Indiana State Museum in 1990.
