The new Indiana Museum
at White River State Park

The new Indiana Museum, a 230,000 square-foot building incorporating the IMAX Theater, will be the centerpiece of the White River State Park's museum complex. Situated on the historic National Road between the NCAA Headquarters and Hall of Champions and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, this new cultural institution will depict the many "stories of Indiana."

The facility, designed by Ratio Architects, is itself about Indiana. The architecture expresses the sense of the "Hoosier" personality combining conservative strength with a contrary spirit. The building uses a simple north/south and east/west axial system suggesting the state's motto, the "Crossroads of America." The building also incorporates materials indigenous to the state including limestone, stainless steel, brick, sandstone, extruded aluminum and glass.

The facility is organized as a two-building complex: the three-level Museum building to the east and the four-level Administration/Collections building to the west. Separated by the Central Canal, the two components are connected with a 200-foot bridge, symbolic of the steel railroad trestles found throughout the state.

The interior exhibits, designed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates, will include a three-story limestone quarry, a lock from the Wabash-Erie canal, the reconstructed School 5 facade, an art gallery, natural and cultural history displays and the Foucault Pendulum, which will be housed in the brick cylindrical tower. The Indiana Museum will also contain a 250-seat auditorium and a 200-seat dining facility.

The new museum is scheduled to open Summer, 2002.
