Historic Sites

ISM Homepage

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources' Division of Museums and Historic Sites includes sixteen historic properties throughout the state. The division's mission is to identify, collect, preserve and interpret the natural and cultural history of Indiana. Through on-site interpretive tours, programs, and special events, the historic sites collectively strive to educate the visiting public about our state.

Time periods covered at Indiana Historic Sites range from a pre-Mississippian village at Angel Mounds in Evansville to the Grissom Air Museum in Peru, where an outside display of aircraft includes the most recent acquisition, a "Blue Angels" F-11 Tiger jet.

Vincennes

Historic sites featuring Hoosiers whose accomplishments reached beyond our midwestern borders include the home and studio of artist T.C. Steele, the cabins and gardens of author/naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter, the birthplace of journalist Ernie Pyle and the structure where Levi Coffin, lauded leader of anti-slavery movements, aided the Underground Railroad.

Our sites encompass the territorial capitol in Vincennes and the first state capitol in Corydon. The post "pioneer" period of Indiana settlement is interpreted in Gentryville where Colonel William Jones lived and employed young Abraham Lincoln at his general store.

The state's first canal system near Metamora offers tours aboard a canal boat pulled by draft horses.

The industrial revolution and lifestyles of influential businessmen are interpreted through the elegantly restored house museums of Culbertson Mansion in New Albany and the Lanier Mansion in Madison.

All of the historic sites are regularly open to the public from early March through mid December.
