221 Years of Unsettled Borders: Indiana and the Northwest Ordinance

221 Years of Unsettled Borders: Indiana and the Northwest Ordinance
The Indiana Supreme Court will hold a free CLE event, “221 Years of Unsettled Borders: Indiana and the Northwest Ordinance,” on Monday, July 14, 2008 from 3:00 - 4:30 pm.

This is a free CLE event sponsored by the Indiana Supreme Court Legal History Lecture Series with support from the Indiana Commission for Continuing Legal Education. It has been assigned course number #112941 for 1.5 hours.  Registration will be completed at the door.

About the Event

Each year this program will focus on different legal issues related to Indiana’s borders as established by the Northwest Ordinance of 1787.  This year’s program will concentrate on Indiana’s southern border—the Ohio River.  A specialist will examine and discuss the primary sources that demonstrate how the border was originally documented, and how the border does not change despite changes in the course of the river.  With this information as a backdrop, the rest of the presentation will be related to commercial activities on the Indiana shoreline between Indiana and Kentucky including a dispute over discharges from the Marble Hill Nuclear Power Plant in Madison, Indiana.

In addition to the Northwest Ordinance and related materials (of course), we plan to offer handouts as well as documents related to the Marble Hill case.  Donald Bogard will be our primary speaker.  Mr. Bogard, formerly Chief Counsel for the Indiana Attorney General, was one of the lead lawyers on the case.
