Alting, Hershman resolution honors town of Battle Ground
Historic community is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year
(STATEHOUSE) – Thanks to State Sens. Ron Alting and Brandt Hershman, the small town of Battle Ground received a big Senate salute recently.
Hershman (R-Wheatfield) and Alting (R-Lafayette) co-authored a resolution honoring the 150th anniversary of the town’s consolidation. Battle Ground – named for the Battle of Tippecanoe that took place in 1811 – was consolidated with Harrisonville, named for a key general in that battle, William Henry Harrison.
“This community is a living history lesson for us all,” Hershman said. “What happened here many years ago helped shape the Indiana we know today.”
Alting and Hershman’s resolution praised Battle Ground for “the important” role it has played in Indiana’s history.
The real-life drama began on Nov. 6, 1811, when Harrison met the Shawnee brothers to discuss the demands of the U.S. government. There was another meeting planned the next day – but the ever-cautious Harrison prepared for the worst. Harrison strategically placed his troops in battle formation, instructing his men to sleep fully clothed while, at the same time, assigning a large detail for sentinel duty.
True to his instincts, the camp was attacked the next day. Harrison and his army defeated the group of American Indians, all but ending Indian wars in the Midwest.
“Battle Ground is an important historical relic and it was an honor to recognize its many contributions to our state in front of our Senate colleagues,” Alting said.
“Battle Ground will forever hold a special place in our state’s history,” Hershman said. “We appreciate not only the community’s past, but its present day example of Hoosier hospitality and its role in teaching future generations about Indiana’s history.”
