FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alting expected to become new Commerce Chair, say Statehouse leaders

(STATEHOUSE) – State Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) is set to become the next chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Public Policy and Interstate Cooperation, according to Statehouse leaders.

The official announcement may not be made until Nov. after results of the General Election are known and legislators reorganize for the 2009 legislative session. But Alting is already being briefed by Senate President Pro Tem David C. Long (R-Fort Wayne) and Sen. Marvin Riegsecker (R-Goshen), the committee’s longtime chair.

Riegsecker is retiring from the legislature later this year.

“This is a key Senate committee, and requires solid business acumen, together with a breadth of knowledge and experience that can only be gained by working on these issues within the legislative process,” Long said. “Senator Alting possesses all of these attributes. I am confident he will do an excellent job.”

Long said the committee deals with a number of key business, consumer and state policy matters, including alcohol and tobacco sales, consumer protection, gaming, business professions and interstate issues.

“Ron’s years of public service as a Lafayette city councilman and council president coupled with his senate experience, his education and business background make him uniquely qualified for this upcoming appointment by Sen. Long,” Riegsecker said. “As chair, Sen. Alting will have the opportunity to work on many issues impacting the lives of his constituents and Hoosiers statewide. The variety of topics the powerful committee addresses keeps the assignment fresh and fascinating everyday and at every hearing.”

Alting is a 10-year veteran of the Indiana Senate. His senate district includes most of Tippecanoe County.
