Becker: Bill could help blind, disabled
qualify for property tax deduction

(STATEHOUSE) – State Senators today passed a bill that will help thousands of blind and disabled Hoosier property taxpayers receive a special tax deduction on their residence. The bill, authored by Sen. Vaneta Becker (R-Evansville), would increase the income limit for the blind and disabled from $17,000 to $20,610 and make those at that income threshold eligible for the deduction.

Currently, blind and disabled property taxpayers can receive a deduction of $12,480 on the assessed value of their home. To qualify, their income cannot exceed $17,000. Becker’s bill will increase the income limit to $20,610. By increasing the income limit, approximately 6,500 additional blind or disabled taxpayers could qualify for the property tax deduction.

“Property tax deductions are established to help taxpayers,” Becker said. “By increasing the taxable income limit, more people could qualify for these deductions.”

According to Becker, if passed into law SB 263 would be effective for taxes payable in 2009.

By a 48-0 vote, the Senate passed SB 263. The bill will move to the Indiana House of Representatives.

Sen. Becker represents Senate District 50, which includes portions of Vanderburgh and Warrick counties.
