For Students & Educators >  Intern Program > Senate Communications Interns Senate Communications Interns

Involve. Invest. Intern!

Who?

Indiana State Senate Majority Caucus members are seeking experienced, energetic journalism, public relations and telecommunications undergraduate and graduate students to join our team as media interns at the Statehouse in Indianapolis for the spring semester.

What?

Qualified candidates will have successful academic backgrounds with practical experience in a newsroom, agency, radio or television station setting. Positions will require strong writing skills in Associated Press style. Selected candidates will be teamed with full-time press secretaries.

When?

Internships begin with an orientation at the end of December and last the duration of the spring academic semester.

Where?

Interns should plan to live in Indianapolis or the surrounding area during the legislative session, as the internship requires daytime and some evening duties at the Statehouse (A $700 bi-weekly stipend is provided to assist with living expenses).

Why?

Interns will gain practical experience in preparing news releases, guest columns, letters to the editor, direct mail, e-newsletters, e-invitations, Web updates, radio feeds, podcasts and video production.

College Credit

Academic credit for the internship varies from school to school and is arranged between interns and their colleges. On average, interns receive between 6 and 12 credit hours for working at least 35 hours per week in the Senate.

Interns often arrange a correspondence or independent course with a professor from their university.

A three-credit-hour state government course, which takes place at the Statehouse throughout session, is available to all interns.

Scholarship Opportunities

At the end of each year’s legislative session, Verizon Communications offers a $3,000 scholarship to the top intern from each of the caucuses.

Additionally, each caucus will award a $1,000 scholarship from the Rick Gudal Public Service Scholarship Fund. The late Rick Gudal worked for the Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus for 18 years and the scholarship celebrates Rick’s public service legacy and love of education.

Winners have five years to use the awards, after which the money will be donated to their alma mater in their names. Selection is based on input from legislators, staff and peers.
