(STATEHOUSE) Senate President Pro Tempore Robert D. Garton (R-Columbus) announced several changes in the leadership of the Majority Caucus at a news conference this afternoon.
Sen. Joe Harrison (R-Attica) has decided to retire his post as Majority Leader. Harrison first assumed that role in 1980. He will assume the position of Majority Leader Emeritus and is the first person to hold this title in the history of the state. Harrison will continue to be involved in the everyday management of the Senate and will maintain his office and his seat in the Senate Chambers.
“Stepping down was a difficult decision, but due to family considerations, it was the best choice,” Harrison said. “It has been a privilege to serve as Majority Leader the past 24 years, and I will continue my strong dedication and commitment to District 23.”
Garton appointed Sen. David Long (R-Fort Wayne) to succeed Harrison as Majority Leader. Traditionally, the position is responsible for assisting the President Pro Tempore in leading floor discussion of various bills and maintaining and enforcing Senate rules and procedures, among other duties such as scheduling the days standing committees meet, approving distribution of materials to senators and organizing the seating chart for the Senate chambers, and other duties as assigned by the Pro Tempore.
“It is an honor to be chosen to follow in the footsteps of a great statesman like Joe Harrison,” Long said. “For me, this creates an exciting opportunity to be an integral part of the sweeping changes that will take place in state government over the next few years.”
Sen. Patricia Miller (R-Indianapolis) was appointed Assistant Majority Leader.
Garton also announced that Sen. Sue Landske (R-Cedar Lake) will remain Assistant President Pro Tempore, Sen. Joe Zakas (R-Granger) will remain Majority Whip and Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) remains Assistant Majority Whip.
Sen. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis), who was recently elected Caucus Chairman, announced that Sen. Richard Bray (R-Martinsville) remains Assistant Caucus Chair. He will be joined by his Co-Assistant Caucus Chair Connie Lawson (R-Danville).
“I am pleased with our strong, experienced leadership team,” Garton said. “I look forward to working with the governor and the House to develop and pass innovative public policy in 2005.”
