Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman Joins Hoosier Ag Science Academy Students to Present Donation to Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis
Money to help victims of severe weather and flooding across Indiana
Indianapolis, IN: Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and students from Lawrence Early College High School today presented John Lyter, CEO of the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis, with a $200 check on behalf of the Hoosier Agribusiness and Science Academy.
The Hoosier Agribusiness and Science Academy is an education initiative the Lt. Governor began last year to educate urban high school students about agriculture, focusing on hands-on learning and career development.
"At a time like this, when our state is recovering from a major catastrophe, it’s important that we work together and help our neighbors – just as the Hoosier Ag Science Academy students have," said Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman. "We could all learn a lesson from the students and their generous spirit. I am very proud of their efforts."
As part of the Academy’s curriculum, students formed teams and ran a farmers market on the campus of Ivy Tech Community College from produce they hand-picked at Waterman’s Farm Market in Indianapolis. The teams were allowed to keep their earnings. Instead, the students chose to combine their profits and donate the proceeds to the American Red Cross’s storm relief efforts.
"This donation represents true selflessness by the Hoosier Agribusiness and Science Academy students," said American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis CEO John Lyter. "These funds will help the Red Cross provide emergency assistance and other support to our friends and neighbors affected by the recent tornadoes and floods."
