Hoosier Rising Star Award
Lt. Governor Becky Skillman created the Hoosier Rising Star Award in 2007 to acknowledge the outstanding young people who are making a difference in their communities.
Awarded annually, the Rising Star is open to any student enrolled in grades K-12 during the 2011-12 school year. Nominees can be public, private or home school students and must be Indiana residents. Strong candidates will have created or led an innovative project addressing needs in their communities. Past winners have worked to raise awareness in agriculture and domestic abuse, while others have led non-profits benefiting juvenile cancer patients and underprivileged children in need of school supplies.
A successful candidate will display interest and focus in issues such as economic development or education, or social issues such as abuse, crime, hunger, and poverty. The ideal nominee will have performed at least one significant volunteer activity during the school year. Nominations can be submitted by a member of the student’s community.
Nominations may be supplemented by the student’s biography, up to three letters of recommendation, and any relevant press clippings. All application materials should be submitted by March 2, 2012. The winners will be recognized at a date to be determined in 2012.
