State Librarian
Roberta L. Brooker was appointed Indiana State Librarian by the Indiana Library and Historical Board on June 1, 2007, a position she held in interim since December 2005. Ms. Brooker is responsible for overseeing the daily affairs of the State Library, which include developing and providing library services to Indiana citizens and the state government, encouraging and supporting the development of the library profession, strengthening the services of publicly and privately supported libraries in the state, and maintaining a complete collection of Indiana documents.
Under Ms. Brooker's direction, the State Library has succeeded in making its collections more accessible to the public, while preserving them for future generations. The Library, once one of the best kept secrets in Indiana, is now being promoted more aggressively. The Library is also actively pursuing new opportunities and partnerships that will benefit not only the State Library, but Indiana's entire statewide library community.
Ms. Brooker has spent nearly two decades at the State Library, starting as a Reference Librarian in 1988. She went on to serve in several other capacities, including as Coordinator of the Indiana State Data Center, and as a Consultant for the Library Development Office. Ms. Brooker was also responsible for incorporating Indiana's public library districts into a Geographic Information System (GIS). Through her efforts, Indiana became on of the first states to use GIS to analyze data and geography simultaneously, which enabled individuals to compare and contrast library districts given multiple statistical variables.
Ms. Brooker received a Bachelors of Arts degree in English from the University of Indianapolis and her Master's Degree in Library Science from Indiana University.
