Adams County

Adams County, located in the northeast portion of the state, was officially established in 1836. The county name honors then U.S. President John Quincy Adams. The county seat is Decatur and its natural resources include hardwood forests, sand, limestone, peat, and oil.

Allen County

Allen County, in the northeast corner of the state, was organized in 1823 and named for John Allen, a State Senator from Kentucky who defended Fort Wayne. The county is home to the former headquarters of the Miami Indians. In the 1800s the Wabash and Erie Canal began at its county seat, Fort Wayne.

Bartholomew County

Bartholomew County was organized in 1821 in the south central area of the state. The county was named for General and Indiana Senator Joseph Bartholomew, who was wounded at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. The county seat, Columbus, was once called Tiptonia for General John Tipton, who introduced the bill to the Indiana General Assembly to establish the county.

Blackford County

Blackford County was named for Indiana Supreme Court Justice Isaac Blackford, the Indiana legislature’s very first Speaker of the House. The county was organized in 1839 in the east part of the state and its county seat is Hartford City. It is home to the Godfroy Reserve (named for Miami Indian Chief Francois Godfroy) where both Miami and Delaware Indians stayed in the early 1800s.

Brown County was organized in 1836 and named for Major General Jacob Brown, an American army officer in the War of 1812. Its claim to fame is Brown County State Park, the largest in the state. The county and its county seat, Nashville, are also well-known for being a haven for artists.

Greene County

Greene County, named for Major General Nathaniel Greene, a Revolutionary War figure, was established in 1821. Bloomfield became the official county seat in 1824, after the original county seat, Burlington, was found to be nearly waterless. Bloomfield is noted to be the ninth smallest town in the United States to have a daily newspaper.

Hamilton County

Hamilton County was founded in 1823 and is named for Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, who was killed in a famous duel with Aaron Burr. Its seat is Noblesville, which was the location of the murder trial of D.C. Stephenson, the Grand Dragon of the Indiana Ku Klux Klan in the early twentieth century. Additionally, it is reported that the cabin of William Conner, an early resident of Hamilton County, was the place that commissioners met in 1820 to designate Indianapolis as the state capital.

Hancock County

Named for founding father John Hancock in 1828, Hancock County was home to Hoosier writer, poet, and philanthropist James Whitcomb Riley. Its seat is Greenfield. Located directly east of Indianapolis, Hancock County is largely agricultural, although many of its residents commute to the state capital for work.

Harrison County

Harrison County was named for William Henry Harrison, a military leader at the Battle of Tippecanoe, who also served as both Governor of Indiana and as the 9th President of the United States. It was founded in 1808 and the county seat is Corydon, which was the first Indiana State Capital. Harrison County is also noteworthy for being the home to 76 caves, more than any other county in the United States.

Hendricks County

Hendricks County was founded in 1824 and was named for then-governor William Hendricks. From 1867 until 2005, it was home to the Indiana Boys School, a correctional facility for juvenile males. The county seat is Danville.
