Place Based Investment Fund

The Indiana Office of Tourism Development (IOTD) and the Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) have announced the winning proposals for the 2014 Place Based Investment Fund. The fund, in its second year, is a $300,000 competitive matching grant program to support collaborative community and economic development projects.

2014 PBIF Awarded Projects Summary

The grants are targeted toward “quality of place” initiatives across Indiana, which improve both the quality of life and tourism experience in a community. The agencies are seeking applications for projects that will develop multi-purpose, unique community gathering places.

Applicants are required to leverage local funding and partnerships. Performance-based quality of place initiatives that maximize investment and collaboration by local governments, economic development organizations, convention and visitor bureaus, Indiana Main Street organizations, public or private schools and community foundations are the intended recipients of these grants, ranging between $25,000 and $50,000. There is a 1:1 cash match requirement.

Traditional marketing, printing and advertising are not eligible. The fund is designed to support community investments that make tangible improvements to the quality of a place.

A:  A PBIF award would not disqualify anyone from any other OCRA funds.

Q:  What can be considered as matching funds for PBIF?

A:  Only cash match will be considered.  It must be at least a 1:1 to match the grant request with contributions from at least two of the partners. No state or federal funds can be used as match for a PBIF project.

Q:  What are examples of past projects funded through the program?

A:  Previously funded projects are no indication of the competitiveness for the current round.  Creativity is encouraged, so past projects should not inhibit your ingenuity.  A listing of projects funded in the previous round of PBIF can be found HERE.

Q:  Are nonprofits eligible applicants for the program?

A:  Yes, nonprofits are welcomed and encouraged to participate.  However, there must be at least two of the listed community organizations serving as partners in the collaboration.
