The Indiana Office of Energy & Defense Development (OED) was established to shepherd the state’s energy plan. Realizing that sound energy policy has a significant impact on economic development, OED guides efforts to find homegrown energy solutions for our nation’s armed forces, as well as assisting and promoting economic development in Indiana in the defense and energy industries.
Hoosier Homegrown Energy is Indiana’s strategic energy plan. When implemented in 2006, it was the state’s first new energy plan in 20 years. Its goals are straightforward:
OED has established partnerships on a state level in order to promote the use of local resources, such as clean coal and agricultural products to create energy in the form of electric generation, synthetic natural gas and alternative transportation fuels. With the leadership of Lt. Governor Becky Skillman OED is working with stakeholders in a variety of industries to maximize jobs and economic vitality by being a home for energy development. This not only grows Hoosier jobs, but helps make us more energy independent.
The office serves as a resource for State Government and all Hoosiers on matters of energy policy and education.
The Energy Division of OED remains in charge of the State Energy Plan, which establishes grant programs funded by the U.S. Department Of Energy. These grants promote the use of alternative power and biofuels, energy efficiency and public education on energy issues in Indiana.
