Immigrant and Refugee Service Corps (IRSC) will mobilize community support to increase services, build capacity and strengthen the network of service providers addressing the needs of our immigrant and refugee population. Additionally, IRSC will focus on learning from and educating the community about the immigrant and refugee experience. Collaborating host-site agencies include: Immigrant Welcome Center, Exodus Refugee Resettlement Catholic Charities, Butler University’s Center for Citizenship and Community, Muslim Alliance of Indiana, Christian Theological Seminary’s Family Counseling Center, Indiana Network of Higher Education Ministries/Franklin College, Big Car Service Center and Indianapolis Office of International & Cultural Affairs.

Members can serve in one of two ways in HabiCorps program: The A Team or the Traditional Role. Traditional members are assigned to different Habitat affiliates throughout the state and serve in 4 main areas: Construction, Volunteer Coordination, Family Support and Capacity Building. A Team members serve together in a group of 5 AmeriCorps members. The team is based in Indianapolis but also travels for 1-2 weeks at a time to smaller, more rural affiliates to help with construction or special projects. All HabiCorps members will be involved in service directly related to eliminating sub-standard or poverty housing for low resource families.

Using data collected from a comprehensive assessment conducted in program year 2011-2012, Indiana Heritage Corps members will establish priorities and then clean, restore, and create twenty-five (25) miles of pedestrian, equestrian, multi-use, and other types of trails at four Indiana State Parks throughout the state. During program year 2012-2013, the IDNR will have two program sessions that align with collegiate schedule: one in Fall 2012 with 24 members, and one in Summer 2013 with 24 members.

The Indiana Response and Preparedness Corps aims to help communities in northern and central Indiana effectively prepare for and respond to disasters. From teaching disaster preparedness classes to recruiting and mentoring new disaster volunteers to working with local businesses able to provide shelter in times of disaster, the Indiana Response and Preparedness Corps is preparing and helping communities before, during, and after a disaster strikes.

The Neighborhood After School Corps, an AmeriCorps program of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indianapolis, provides services and programs to better the lives of youth in Marion County. Members both develop new programs and assist with ongoing services that focus on leadership development and the creation of opportunities for youth to implement community service projects. Additional services such as tutoring, after school enrichment activities, summer day camps, conflict resolution skills, violence prevention skills, health education, and organized recreation are offered to meet the needs of low-income, vulnerable youth and their families in Indianapolis.

AmeriCorps Members will provide career counseling for secondary students in four counties in Indiana. This AmeriCorps project recruits diverse young people, ages 18-30, and places them in community and faith-based organizations where they serve for four days each week for ten months on projects that create, improve or expand services with measurable results. Every Friday, known as the fifth day, members participate in an intensive leadership program that blends individual coaching, team building, weekly training, critical reflection, and team service projects in which members develop, implement and evaluate projects that impact their communities.

The Robinson Community Learning Center (RCLC) AmeriCorps program strives to provide low-income, minority youth with the educational support and healthy community they need in order to thrive. Starting Over members will serve ex-offenders returning to Marion County, Indiana. These services include personal instruction, guidance and support in assisting ex-offenders to overcome reentry-related obstacles. Member services will also provide coaching and technical assistance to reentry-related service providers in the Marion County area. A rating system will also be implemented, comparable to Angie’s List, so ex-offenders can rate services received from reentry related service providers.

USI ACT addresses the entrenched problem of generational poverty through the provisions of education initiatives. The program will offer one-on-one and small group assistance to adults working toward their GED. Academic engagement programming is offered to school-age youth and their families to address barriers such as bullying, drugs, homelessness, pregnancy, lack of motivation, and fears of ‘falling behind’ in school work. Members will work in small groups or one on one with students to increase their school engagement while decreasing obstacles to success.
