IDEM boosts recycling efforts in Indiana schools

Six schools receive their share of over $26,000 to start or enhance recycling programs

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) awarded six Indiana schools their share of $26,675 as part of a new grant program for 2008. The school recycling learning grants are offered through IDEM's Indiana recycling grant program.

School recycling learning grants are awarded on a competitive basis. The grants provide funding for school recycling collection activities, education activities emphasizing source reduction, reuse and recycling, and "buy recycled" or composting efforts.

"I am pleased to be part of IDEM's efforts to make an investment in educating and encouraging the environmental caretakers of tomorrow," said IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly. "It is very rewarding to see our youth participate in proactive efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle to make an impact on Indiana's environment."

Below is the list of recipients and a description of their projects:

. Christel House Academy (Marion County) will purchase recycling totes, recycling containers, media center resources, signage and bulletin board supplies.

. Crawford County School Corporation (Crawford County) will purchase seeds, two books, Garden Wizardry for Kids, and Let it Rot! The Gardner's Guide to Composting, and gardening supplies.

. Jay County High School Corporation (Jay County) will purchase recycling containers.

. Lakewood Park Christian School (Dekalb County) will purchase recycling containers and a tote cart.

. Reitz Memorial High School (Vanderburgh County) will purchase a yard barn, dolly, recycling containers, bags and gloves.

. Signature School (Vanderburgh County) will purchase recycling containers with lids, bags and tote carts.

The school recycling learning grants are available to public and private elementary schools, middle/junior high schools and high schools with a maximum grant award of $1,000 to implement a recycling project. Grants require a 50 percent match of funds or in-kind services. For more information visit http://www.in.gov/recycle/2651.htm. Grant money comes from the Indiana Solid Waste Management Fund, an account generated by a per-ton fee on solid waste disposed at Indiana landfills. The fund supports source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting to prevent solid waste from permanent disposal.
