Indianapolis- One person was killed this morning in a one vehicle crash in southeast Marion County. The one vehicle crash, which occurred about 6:10 am, slowed traffic from westbound I-74 to northbound I-465 for about 50 minutes.
According to witnesses, the 2002 Chevrolet pick-up truck was traveling westbound on I-74 and took the ramp to northbound I-465. For unknown reasons, the vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway. It appeared the driver over corrected, then traveled across both lanes of the ramp from I-74 to I-465 and down the embankment on the east side of the roadway.
A witness to the crash stopped to check on the driver and was soon joined by Trooper Jesse Schmidt, who drove upon the scene. The driver suffered a severe laceration to his neck and was bleeding profusely. The witness, who was a nurse, and the arriving troopers were able to stop the bleeding until medics arrived. The driver was transported to Wishard Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:13am. The crash scene was cleared by 7:00am.
The name of the driver will be released when family notification has been made.
The crash was investigated by Tpr. Jesse Schmidt and he was assisted by Indiana State Police Sgt. Butch Michaels, Tpr. Russ Litt, units from Indianapolis Fire Department, and units from INDOT Traffic Management Center.
