ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. - The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Fort Wayne District
announces that S.R. 1 / Dupont Road added travel lanes project, between the I-69 interchange to just east of Tonkel Road, began this week. Traffic was switched mid-week to the north so that construction on the south side of Dupont Road can begin. The construction zone is now restricted to one 10-foot lane in each direction until late September.
Motorists can expect to see embankment construction and excavation work at Martin Ditch and near the Dupont Estates Mobile Home Park. After that construction is complete, temporary asphalt widening work will begin on the same side of the road. Some utility work remains.
By Thanksgiving, traffic should be switched to the new temporary asphalt widened area. Once traffic is switched, similar construction will take place on the north side of Dupont Road.
Upon the completion of the project, from I-69 to Tonkel, the roadway will have dedicated turn lanes and medians. The concrete roadway from I-69 to Diebold Road will have three lanes in both directions. From Diebold Road to Tonkel Road, it will have two lanes in each direction. The road from this point will narrow down to meet the existing two-lane facility east of Tonkel Road. The project includes signal and sign modernization, replacement of two structures, seed and sod work and new approaches. Sidewalks will be placed on the north side, from Tonkel Road east to Oak Chapel Drive, as well as on the south side, from east of Tonkel Road to Tokheim Corporation Driveway. The project will be complete in summer 2011.
The project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The contract was awarded to Primco Construction in May based on the company's low bid of $11.2 million.
