ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces signal timing changes are being made at several intersections in St. Joseph County. The modifications will optimize traffic flow in helping more vehicles receive green lights throughout the corridor.
Recently, signal timings were updated along State Road 23 (S.R. 23) from University Park Mall to Edison Road. Within the next few months, timing along the following corridors also will be updated:
- State Road 331 (S.R. 331) from Cleveland Road to State Road 933 (S.R. 933)
- S.R. 23 from Elm Road to Cleveland Road
- S.R. 933 from Center Street to Beiger Street
The goal of the updates is to increase traffic flow along the mainline state road and side streets. The improvements include changing how long it takes for signals at an intersection to complete their cycles or changing the order in which each light at an intersection changes.
Changing the order of signal changes may include a lagging left turn. Traditionally, vehicles on a protected left-turn lane receive the green arrow before through traffic receives the green light. But at a lagging left turn signal, the left-turn arrow will turn green after the through traffic has received the green light.
The work schedule is subject to change in the event of inclement weather. INDOT reminds motorists to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through a construction zone. For the latest news and information about INDOT, please visit www.in.gov/indot.
