INDOT responds to traffic flow along I-94

Speed limit increases from 55 to 70 mph in Porter County

PORTER COUNTY, Ind. - In response to recent speed checks, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces the speed limit for both directions of I-94 between mile markers (MM) 17 and 26.6 in Porter County will soon increase from 55 mph to 70 mph. New speed limit signs will be installed along the 9.6-mile section starting Aug. 25.

The I-94 speed limit is already 70 mph from MM 26.6 to the Michigan state line. In the Porter County section, the radar speed checks discovered the average motorists is already safely traveling at 70 mph. Based on the data collected, the criteria has been met for raising the speed limit.

The I-80/94 speed limit from the Illinois state line to MM 17 will remain 55 mph because of the traffic congestion. Also, the area is highly populated and there are more weaving movements of traffic at the many interchanges in close proximity through Lake County.

INDOT reminds motorists to always follow the posted speed limit, drive safely and be considerate of highway workers when driving through a construction zone. For the latest news and information about INDOT, please visit www.in.gov/indot.
