Lieutenant Governor Skillman Awards Orleans with a $45,450 Planning Grant
Indiana Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman recently awarded the Town of Orleans with a $45,450 planning grant the town will use to fund a preliminary architectural study on a vacant building. The purpose of the study is to determine the feasibility of renovating the building to serve as a community center/ fire station. The Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs administers planning grants through the Small Cities and Towns Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
"Planning grants are invaluable tools that can help rural communities improve the quality of life for their residents," said Lieutenant Governor Skillman. "I'm pleased to award this grant to Orleans. It's exciting to partner with you, and to recognize your commitment to your community."
Orleans will use the grant to study the feasibility of renovating an existing industrial building to serve as a community center/fire station. The preliminary architectural study will focus on re-use of the building and will examine its structural integrity, conduct electrical and mechanical analysis, evaluate site conditions, as well as perform soil and drainage analysis. The town will also address the cost of utilizing the existing structure versus demolition.
The CDBG grant program has proven to be an effective tool for community-based planning and research initiatives that improve local quality of life and economic opportunities.
