STARKE COUNTY, Ind. - The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces 3.5 miles of State Road 23 (S.R. 23) between U.S. 30 and Koontz Lake will be closed during daylight hours Wednesday. This will allow crews to perform chip-seal road maintenance construction.
Residents and business will have access to their properties in the closed area, but through traffic will be detoured via posted signs. Northbound S.R. 23 traffic will be directed to take U.S. 30 west to U.S. 35 north to U.S. 6 east and back to S.R. 23. Southbound traffic will be directed to take U.S. 6 west to U.S. 35 south to U.S. 30 east and back to S.R. 23.
The chip-seal process consists of distributing a liquid asphalt emulsion on the roadway and covering it with crushed stone to provide a new wearing surface. Chip-sealing extends the life of a roadway by protecting it from moisture, ultra-violet degradation and many other damaging exposures. Motorists should exercise caution during the construction of these projects. Loose stone will be present on the roadway during the initial cure of the asphalt and can damage windshields and paint on vehicles following each other too closely. It is recommended when traveling on a recently chip-sealed road to slow down and allow additional space between you and other motorists.
The work schedule is subject to change in the event of inclement weather. INDOT reminds motorists to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through a construction zone. For the latest news and information about INDOT, please visit www.in.gov/indot.
