Sen. David Long announces grant for Fort Wayne airport

STATEHOUSE (Sept. 10, 2009) - State Sen. David Long (R-Fort Wayne) today announced the Fort Wayne International Airport will receive a $1.08 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Long said the grant will provide funds to rehabilitate shoulders adjacent to the main runway at the airport.

"The need to rehabilitate these shoulders was based on a recommendation after a safety inspection," Long said. "This project will enhance safety of the runway."

Long said the grant money will be available in time to get the project completed before the end of the year.

Officials with the airport say shoulders of the runway extend 25 feet on both sides and this project would cover about 3,800 feet. This grant will be 95 percent federal funds, with 2.5 percent coming from the state and another 2.5 percent from the airport itself.

Time estimates for the project call for a 45-day construction period, according airport officials. A preconstruction meeting is planned next week.
