Friend Report

This past weekend, I spoke to several people but the highlight was the annual Chamber of Commerce awards banquet.  The event was well attended and the fellowship was great, but the most important result was the positive feeling about the community everyone received.

The business of the year was awarded to the Square D Company, Peru's largest employer.  They have been a stalwart in Miami County for years and have provided wonderful opportunities for employment for many people.  It's a quality company with many quality employees.

McClure Orchard was recognized for their contribution to the community as a family-owned and runretail business.  The McClures produce more than apples; the orchard also serves as a restaurant, gift shop and petting zoo.   Family involvement makes this endeavor a pleasure to observe and visit.

Riverside was recognized as a new employer in Miami County.  The company re-opened a closed RV manufacturing facility and is finding new markets for the product.  Rebirth of this facility brings employment and hope for this area.

The final award I wish to discuss was the Citizen of the Year, Herschel Manhart.  Herschel manages the Helping Hands food bank in Peru.  This organization provides much needed assistance to families in need in this area. Food and everyday staples are made available because of donations to the Helping Hands.  Distribution of the commodities is handled by a very capable group managed by Mr. Manhart.  Helping Hands provides a safety net to many families and individuals in our community who are having a hard time during these difficult economic times.

This is not a complete listing of all the awards, but it illustrates the good things occurring in our community.  One of the privileges of being able to write this column is to share positive news. While the economy has not been kind to this part of Indiana,  the citizens of Miami County have taken  positive and charitable actions to help their fellow neighbors deal with this  adversity. Employers, investors and charities have recognized their responsibilities and their roles to manage their way through a tough economic time.

I think a meeting of this type does more than put people together.  It salutes the good works of many and raises the morale of people so they continue to do what is best for a community.  My observation has always been that an economy thrives on confidence.  Employers, investors, employees and charities need confidence to continue their work.  Without confidence, everyone folds their tent and hunkers down to wait out the bad times.

I'm proud of our community, and I know that this story is occurring all over our state, because it demonstrates the resilient attitude it takes to succeed.

Confidence, perseverance and some risk will help us to overcome this adversity.  Along the way, some thoughtful charity is necessary.  I trust we can use these characteristics to overcome the current economic obstacles.

More later,

Bill Friend
