Looking to become a licensed vehicle dealer in the state of Indiana? Just follow the steps below and you will be on your way!

Step 1 - Important legal review

We encourage those wanting to obtain their automotive dealer license in the state of Indiana to review the state laws and codes regarding dealer licensing. Please, read Indiana codes 9-18-26, 9-23-2, and Indiana administrative code 75 before moving on to Step 2.

Step 2 - Completing the application

Below are the steps to successfully complete the application to become a licensed vehicle dealer in the state of Indiana. In order to achieve superior service, accuracy and cost savings, please read the application and fill it out completely.

    Documents the division supplies

    Documents you must obtain and provide to the division

  • Registered retail merchant certificate
  • $25,000 surety bond
  • Zoning approval - completed on bottom of auto dealer application by local zoning board
  • Insurance (Certificate of Liability) **
  • Pictures of building, lot, sign and hours of operation
  • Franchise agreement - only needed if "new" is marked on the application
  • Copy of Certificate of Incorporation or Certificate of Organization from the Indiana Secretary of State’s Business Services Division
  • Please provide federal ID number with documentation from Internal Revenue Service
  • Please provide social security numbers for owners/partners/directors/officers listed on auto dealer application

Step 3 - Sign, seal and mail!

Once you complete all of the steps and ensure all paperwork is filled out correctly, send your documents to the following address:
