Voter List Maintenance Information - 2014

June 17, 2014 Voter List Maintenance from Secretary of State Connie Lawson

The Secretary of State’s Election Division is conducting a voter list refresh to update Indiana’s voter registration information. The refresh will identify outdated and inaccurate voter registration information to help counties improve the accuracy and integrity of Indiana’s voter registration list.

In May, all 4.4 million “active” Hoosier voters received a postcard with important election information. In June, Hoosier voters whose first postcard was returned as “undeliverable” as addressed received a postcard in the mail from the Secretary of State Election Division asking them to update their voter registration information. Voters who receive a second postcard asking for updated information should fill it out and return it to the Secretary of State Election Division. Voters who received a second postcard asking for their current address have until July 24 to update their voter information. Voters who do not respond by confirming their current address or updating their information will have their voter registration record at that address put on the inactive list.

Being on the inactive list does not mean a voter cannot vote. It simply means a voter did not update or confirm their address information. The voter will still be eligible to vote in November, if otherwise qualified. If the voter casts a ballot in November from that address, they will be reclassified as an active voter. If they do not vote in November, they can still vote in the municipal elections of 2015 and the federal elections of 2016.  If they do not vote in any election prior to January 2017, the county voter registration office may remove them from the poll lists.
