Authorized by Vernon Town Charter (Local Acts 1851, chapter 1, section 3, as amended by Acts 1893, chapter 59, section 1). Under the Vernon Town Charter, the official titles of the town officers are "Mayor, Councilman, Recorder [a post obsolete since further amendments in 1963], Marshal, and Treasurer."
