Do I have
to pay back the grant?
How do I apply for state grants?
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be received by the Federal Processor for state scholarship/grant consideration after January 1st but on or before March 10th each year.
Why does SSACI request additional information such
as signed copies of federal and state tax returns, sources of income,
documentation of residency, etc
?
Why
do I need to provide this information?
Eligibility for SSACI's programs can not be determined until the requested
information is received.
If
I don't file taxes, what do I do?
Provide SSACI a statement listing the source(s) and amount of your income,
including supporting documentation such as 1099 statements.
How
do I document residency?
Provide SSACI a signed copy of your State of Indiana tax return. If you
did not file a return, provide a copy of your current lease or mortgage.

do I send the information?

Why didn't I get a grant?
You may look at your application materials online at eStudent, www.ssaci.IN.gov/estudent.
Some reasons for not receiving a grant include:
Grants
are based on financial need and you didn't show need for the college chosen.
You didn't
respond to a SSACI request for additional information by the deadline.
Your parents
are not residents of the state of Indiana or you are an independent student
who is not a resident of Indiana.
Your eligibility
has expired (you have ten years to use up to eight semesters of grant).
You have
a prior degree.
Did not
file the FAFSA by the MARCH 10th receipt date deadline.
After requesting a change of college, why did my grant
go down or get withdrawn completely?
SSACI grants are for tuition only and tuition varies between colleges.
I received a Grant Notice earlier and received a certain
dollar amount, later I received another Notice that indicated my grant was
lowered or withdrawn completely, why?
The college has a verification process mandated by the federal government
in which it must verify information on the FAFSA.
The number of FAFSA forms verified
varies between colleges, but it must equal at least 30% of all FAFSAs received
at that college. Colleges are also free to verify more than the mandated
30% of applications if they so choose. If the verification of your FAFSA
results in any change, the college is required to send SSACI this information
which may result in a revision or withdrawal of your state grant.
SSACI also has a verification process. If information is missing
or incomplete on your FAFSA, SSACI
must verify the correct information by requesting documents such as state
tax returns, welfare receipts, a copy of your driver's license, etc.
How did I get this grant and what do I do with it?
If you filled out the FAFSA and
marked that you are a resident of Indiana then the information was sent
to SSACI. You do not have to do anything with it as long as the grant
is for the correct college. The college has been notified and it
will credit your account if you are eligible. The grant can only be used
for tuition.
Can this grant be used at an out-of-state institution?
No, the grant can be used only at
(Colleges and Universities Eligible to Receive State Financial Aid ).
Do I have to pay back the grant?
No, the grant is "free" money, but you must maintain the required
enrollment. If you drop classes or withdraw completely, your state grant
can be reduced or withdrawn, even after the college has applied it to your
bill.
